Blackpool – Sand, Sea & Spray

I painted in Blackpool recently for the Sand Sea & Spray 2012 event. The weather was miserable but the company was great.
I was on under partial shelter from the worst of the North West’s weather along-side Dale Grimshaw, Oliver Winconek and David Le Flemming. It was great to see the guys like Beta, Ben Slow, David Walker and JS from Jana & JS again as well as make some new acquaintances.

Self Portrait

Self Portrait - julian kimmings, 2012

Here’s something I started a while ago. It’s a self portrait, a subject I’ve never been comfortable with… myself.

I’ve actually started many self portraits in the past, only this one has ever been completed or seen the light of day. I’m not sure why I found painting myself hard, maybe other artists have the same issue. I was always taught to paint what you see, not what you think you see. The mind can play tricks on perception and ego also likes to play it’s hand, warping our perception of reality or self into something that’s too perfect or unreal. Painting this piece has given me a fresh perspective on myself and who I am, and taught me that my ego, however big, can’t be in control.

The finished oil piece.

“Stare” 2012 – 205x250mm Oil and spray paint on canvas board.

I think I’m starting a love-hate relationship with oil paint. It’s all new to me, and the adventure-come-discovery makes me giddy. I really enjoy the way I can play with the paint and move it around and the texture and viscosity is great to work with. It’s a totally different way of working than my favoured medium, acrylic, which is a much faster way of painting. I got into the habit of painting quickly, trying to get the moment of inspiration and thought onto the canvas as quickly as possible so that I don’t lose any of the meaning or the emotional connection.

Painting with oil, as many have told me, requires a great deal of patience and humility – which is something I could with a little more of.

Working With Oils

I’m slowing getting back into the oils and really starting to get the hang of it now.

New Medium

I went out and bought some oil paints today. It’s something I have wanted to do for some time, but always found a ‘reason’ not to.

Self portrait

I’ve been wanting to do a self portrait for some time, but have always  found an excuse not to do it. Time to step up and stop being a pussy… (in progress).

BP Awards

Feeling a little deflated after receiving confirmation that my entry for the BP Portrait Award wasn’t chosen out of over 2000 entries. It wasn’t a surprise by any means. I didn’t actually believe that I would win, but I did have a ‘what if’ moment. That’s all it was, a moment of giddiness – don’t worry, it’s all gone away now.

Back to reality and back to the paint.
